Mittens for Detroit
- Giving back to the community by collecting mittens
Date: 12/07/19
Each year at the Light Up the Night festival, we collect mittens and gloves for an organization called Mittens for Detroit. Mittens for Detroit is an organization that collects mittens and gloves and then gives them to people in need. Every year, we set up a box for them and promote donation through our social media pages. People willing to donate place the items in the box. We also created a video for Mittens for Detroit asking for people to donate to the organization. The collection was widely promoted by both us and the Mittens for Detroit organization. This year, we collected 52 pairs of mittens and gloves, more than any amount in the previous three years we have been running the drive. |
Blankets for Project Linus
- Giving back to the community
Date: 11/27/19
Every year as one of our community service projects, we make blankets. Making these blankets was a great team activity for all of us. We have been making blankets for the last few years. Project Linus is a non-profit organization which provides homemade blankets to children in need. We have made 12 no sew fleece blankets. We purchased fleece with frogs on them - keeping with our team name. We cut off a 4 inch squares from each corner and then cut a 1 inch fringe around the blanket and tied it into a knot. Making these blankets was a really fun team activity for the entire team. We will send it to the organization so that they can be donated to the kids. |
TOYS FOR TOTS DRIVE AT FROG FORCE FRENZY
Date: 09/16/19
This is the seventh year we ran the Toys for Tots drive at the Frog Force Frenzy FTC Qualifier. Every year, we send out our flyer to the Frog Force Frenzy event coordinator and then they distribute the flyer to all the teams and volunteers who will be at the competition. We also put the flyer on our Facebook page. The fun part of the event comes after the collection where we get to count all the toys. This year we collected donations that totaled to 33 toys and some extra money. |
PACKING AND ORGANIZING FOOD AT GLEANERS FOOD BANK
Date: 08/22/19
We went to Gleaners Food Bank as one of our outreaches. After we had signed in, we paired up in 5 teams of 2. We were given boxes of cereal and were instructed to transfer 1 pound of cereal into each bag. All teams together, we got almost 1000 pounds of packed cereal by the time we finished at 11:30. It was really fun packaging the cereal and we all enjoyed helping those people who need our help. These packages are sent to churches and other places where they distribute the food to needy. It is especially important during summer as most kids no longer have access to free food at school. We all look forward to this activity as it is not only a great feeling to help other people in the community, but it is also great fun and a team building activity for all of us. |
VOLUNTEERING AT THE ISLAND LAKE TRIATHLON
Date: 07/28/19
Every year hundreds of Triathletes participate in the annual Island Lake of Novi Jon Logan Memorial Triathlon & OWS, sponsored by FAST Swim and Triathlon Club. This sprint event is great for Triathletes of all abilities. In fact, one of our team members, one of our mentors, and an alumni, Sanjith, Mr. Tapeta and Rishi ran and biked in the duathlon. This is the third year we are helping with the event as this is an event takes place in our community. We were assigned a water station and helped out by passing water and Gatorade to the runners. We also stood at the corners where the triathletes could go off in the wrong direction and guided them while also cheering them on. It was a fun experience seeing the triathletes swim and run past us. |
